Lotion socks

(One of the things I think is funny in the U.S., is to go in search of fun stuff. example I found these cream socks and they are fairly nice to wear, but also pretty hot, but they actually work quite well.
I bought them in Duane Reade around. $ 15, they work for a long time, and when you feel there is not so much cream left in them, they recommend that you use a footlotion and put your feet in your sock because it keeps well in the cream.
They were also found as gloves.)

AA towards Bankruptcy

(I will follow up on my earlier post on ang American Apparel and their way of dealing with employees, for now it seems that they really hang with the buttocks and is close to a bankruptcy.
Cover.dk writes that it is caused by the financial crisis, but I guess also that the bad publicity AA has been in the past also helps to make finances less, and together with the financial crisis which scratch so it may be nearing end-to AA.
Exciting to follow what happens to Dov Charney and his company, if he finds a rescue.

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts

(Still have some pictures to show you from New York.
One area which I think is very beautiful, especially when darkness had fallen, is the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the area is incredibly beautiful with a fountain in the middle of the square, and outside around the place is New York City Opera, Metropolitan Opera House and the New York Philharmonic.
Especially the staircase up to the square I am totally game, and thought it is a brilliant idea to show his repertoire.)

Vandaag, East Village – Danish/Dutch Cuisine

In Manhattan you’ll find cuisines and flavors from all corners of the world. That’s a known fact. But one gaping hole in the island’s gastro-map remained – northern European food.

Well, good news. Vandaag, located at 103 Second Ave in the East Village, now offers Danish and Dutch cuisine, from popped barley and bitterballen oxtail croquettes to roasted hen (according to Zagat).

Full disclosure: I haven’t actually visited the place, but I promise to try it soon. If someone out there reading this beats me to it, please tell the world what you think, and don’t forget to take and post a few pictures.

Sunset at Battery Park

(I still have some experiences and things that I haven´t told you.
One evening we went down to Battery Park to hear live music which took place in Castle Clinton, but there were so many people that we gave up quickly to get closer, instead we went into the park and sat on a bench by the water and enjoyed the drinks and food we had brought, and enjoyed the sunset.).

NYC at half the price – groupons

Group coupons (“groupons”) are nothing new, but they have gained immense popularity in recent months.

The premise is simple: you get a daily email with a coupon offer for a restaurant, activity or service, at half the original price or less (for instance, “$25 for $50 worth of dining”). Once enough people sign up, the deal is “on”. You pay and get a printable coupon that you present upon purchase. The coupons are usually valid for at least six months.

The most popular group coupon site is Groupon, but others are just as good: Living Social and DealOn.

Here are a few groupons that I’ve purchased recently:

  • $25 for $50 at a fancy Italian restaurant in SOHO
  • $15 for $30 at an upscale pizzeria in the Upper West Side
  • $10 for a hula hoop class worth $20
  • $7 for $15 at a bakery in the Village
  • $50 for $100 worth of cleaning services for my apartment
  • $30 for $75 for photo album printing

Usually you’d think that groupons are a local thing, reserved for those ‘in the know’. But visitors and tourists can enjoy restaurants and activities that would be too expensive otherwise, or just save some money while your here. Registration is free – and the earlier you register before your visit, the more offers you get.

Here’s today’s groupon:

Statue of liberty lukker i ét år

(Statue of Liberty will be closed for one year, from October 2011. In order to build an extra staircase to make better safety after an false alarm in July this year. So beware, if you plan to give her a visit in October 2011 and one year.)

Washington DC and Bethesda, MD

Many visitors to NYC also visit Washington DC. However, most (admittedly, including myself) never bother to visit Washington’s satellite towns, most notably Bethesda and Georgetown.

We stayed an entire weekend with friends who live on the outskirts of DC. Saturday morning the five of us – four adults and a two-year-old – mounted our bikes and took the beautiful Little Falls trail to downtown Bethesda. It has the charm of a small town, with no chain stores (except for a Barnes & Noble book store, but that’s ok) or chain restaurants in sight. There’s a little promenade area with outdoor restaurants, and lots of neighborhood-y stores, the kind of which you don’t find in NYC.

One exception, though – we came across an abnormally long line for a cupcake shop, which you’d expect in front of Magnolia bakery in the city. We found out that that bakery is featured in a bakery reality show (yes, there is such a thing) on the TLC channel.

Georgetown is a college town, which means that the crowd is younger, hipper and louder. More like the Village or SOHO in NYC.

Next morning we set our sites on DC. Again on our bikes, we rode about 8 km along the Potomac River to the National Mall – the park bounded by the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, the National Museums and many other ‘nationals’, with the White House just a stone’s throw away. In the heart of the Mall is the Washington Memorial. The sight of the towering obelisk from the foot of the Capitol, reflected in the reflection pool, is astounding, no matter how many times you’ve visited.

The best way to get around DC, if you’re up to it, is by bike. Renting a car is a burden, since parking is very limited in the city center. There’s a double decker, hop-on, hop-off bus, which is very convenient, but you miss out on whatever’s between the tourist sites (and you might miss Sasha and Malia on the way home from school). There are many bike rental places around town, and the prices range from $15 a day to $25, depending on how close you are to the National Mall. You can take your bike on the Metro, if you’re staying in the outskirts of town. There are also guided bike tours of DC, which sounds like lots of fun.

Beautiful church – must see

(We also visit an incredibly beautiful church on Upper West Side before we went back to Denmark. The church called Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, and I think this is more worth visiting than the St. Patrick Cathedral located on 5th Ave. And be sure to visit the sculpture on the church’s right side.
The church is not as touristy and this has a lot more small interesting places. The church is enormous with its target of 11,200 m2, length of 183.2 meters, a height of 70.7 meters and the interior height of ship is 37.8 meters high. Really an impressive building)
